Eat Pray Love
Director: Ryan Murphy
Writers: Ryan Murphy (screenplay), Jennifer Salt (screenplay
Stars: Julia Roberts, Javier Bardem and Viola Davis
Plot: A married woman ends her marriage, after realizing that she hasn’t found what she is looking for. She embarks on a journey to look for what she is looking for – eat, pray and finally LOVE.
MbyM: We all have it in us – they virus – to find our true self. Some are week and remain in their comfort zones, others are bold enough embark a painful journey of Self-discovery!
The inner conflict prompts Liz to ends hers marriage, gives up what a stereotype woman wishes all her life - a career, a husband and steps out her comfortable marriage only to fall in the arms of her rebound David (James Franco).
In organizations too change is painful, not readily acceptable and often resisted, since it creates dissonance in people’s comfort zones and organisation’s profitability. The search for peace and happiness – inner balance is so coveted “state” by individuals and organizations alike.
Confused, lost and searching for answers, she is reminded of the prophecy of the medicine man, having a baby, eating Italian food, following a spiritual path in India. The quest for self-discovery starts with a divorce. Her husband is reluctant to divorce, for the same reason – she is divorcing him! FEAR OF REJECTION and SOCIAL JUDGEMENTS.
The organizations too carry on their legacy system and keep on serving the unprofitable markets because of the fear of the social (competition) judgements and feeling associated with incompetence and incapacity.
In Italy, she discovers the essence of having a vision, What’s your Word – the word that defines YOU and the pleasure of doing nothing - “Dolche farniene!”
Translating, these in the context of contemporary organizations, the role of having a vision – what’s your word – I have deliberated on this with my clients, specifically at the times of acquisitions, mergers and takeovers. That word really defines and resurrects an organization in the time of crisis. Recently, in an envisioning exercise with the tops managers of a energy majors in India, the vision of the company underwent a bathos change. It was then put to the board, who complimented the managers for their Guts.
“Dolche Farniene” has been best exemplified by Google, who wants their employees work only 4 days in a week, the fifth is given to experiment with their own projects. Google swears that about 30% of the products are incubated in that one day given to the employees for their own projects!
Slack Resources, is a tight rope walk for organizations, when the scrutiny on the bottom-line is mandatory in these times of recession and financial frugality. Many organizations are thinking of innovative ways to do the same.
In India, she discovers the power of prayer. The process is nothing short of a roller-coaster ride. Disappointment at first, “Being at the source – I feel disconnected”, is quickly complemented with the wonderful advise from Richard Jenkins, “you’re wasting time groceries (Liz) if you’re waiting for him to forgive you – FORGIVE YOURSELF!
The meditations in India were an attempt to reflect the purpose of her life. As they in spiritual literature, we all have been programmed by a supreme order – Physics of Life, Oder of God. To discover it early and to pursue the purpose is the soul. “God dwells in Me as ME!” know this, understand it and be aware of this EVERY second of your life and your LIFE will be as perfect as you want it to be! Jenkins leaves her with a last piece of advise "don't give up on love". Later, in Bali, she is successful in amassing 18,000 USD for a house for her healer Wayan in Bali. As she puts it, “when you set out to help yourself – you end up helping tutti (Italian for Everybody).
The self-less service for the benefit of all, which she learns in India, transforms her to enjoy in the present moment. Realising, Happiness NOW, is all that is required for her to Forgive Herself. In a flight of imagination her husband comes and dances with her – she is set free. She realizes her mistakes, that her husband wasn’t bad, it’s the feeling of waiting or incapacity to take the lead Yourself!
Organisations, have had the similar experiences, paralysis with analysis, often leads to inaction and procrastination by the corporate boards and managers alike. I am reminded, of Amul, credited for creating Operation White Flood (Milk Cooperative) in India. The organization, not only did good for itself or its members, but changed the corporate environment in India. It’s an example of an organisation changing the environment and not the other way round!
Enjoying, and staying in the present moment, also releases the pressures of controlling the factors of future, which controls the performance. Staying in the present, and being effective and efficiency is all the organizations require to tackle change in future!
In Bali, similing within, and as put by the medicine man, “even your LIVER should SMILE”. With much practice and discipline, she comes to terms with her inner conflicts and the balance she seeks. Realising the most important thing in your life and getting it is a blessing. And when you do get it; hold on! As the advice comes from the medicine man, “sometimes to loose balance for LOVE, is a part of Living Balance in Life.
Organisations, too loose this balance for their advantage. From a strategy (planned approach) dictating the structure of the organization they started asking their CUSTOMERS. The customer-centricity led to the strategy of the organization being decided by their customers. Emote with them, knowing their needs and finally falling in Love with your customers. And isn’t THIS, the LIVING BALANCE for any organization? LOVING ITS CUSTOMER!!
Let me know, what you think, till next week – eat pray and love and make your organizations “attar-verse-amo” – cross over (in Italian) the chasm of death (failure)for ourselves and our organisations!!

The Pursuit of HappYness
The Pursuit of HappYness
(Happiness with a Y and not an I)
Writers: Steve Conrad
Stars: Will Smith, Thandie Newton and Jaden Smith
MbyM: The sentence used by Will Smith (Chris Gardner) in the beginning of the movie is understood towards the end of the movie. Chris objects to “HappYness” written with a “Y”. Subconciously, he knew that Happy (read adjective) could be a temporary state of being but “HappIness” (read Noun) is the core of every being. As masters of life have realised that – we all are intrinsically happy (Happiness is us). Pursuit of happiness is all out being aware of happiness in what you do – that is whatever you do. And If still you’re not happy in this very moment – mind it you’ll never be!!!
“I first met my father when I was in grown up – I decided that I will be there for my son”…
Value System: Keep yours intact, it is intrinsic to the core of your being. Change your behaviour according to the situations but keep the value system intact. It keeps you happy. The trick here is to keep the value system as wide as possible so that you’re not ruffled by the various renditions of life you encounter. You keep your cool.
Had “Chis Gardner” had the same principle for her Wife. He woldn’t be separated!
“Rubic Cube” competence – which helps him impress a future boss and lands him in the right job.
Chance encounter into a competence – examples are numerous – Steve Jobs (Apple) loved Calligraphy – used to bunk college to go and learn art of calligraphy – Macintosh was born later. Gulshan Kumar (T series) had a juice shop; recorded songs for clients with imported music system – later established T Series as a major affordable music label in India.
When Chris sees a Ferrari he exclaims – “What do you do & How do you do it?” The person with the sports car replies, “I am Good with Numbers and Good with People.”
Dale Carnegie’s – How to win friends and influence people – does just that – very early in my career I was given this book by my father to read. He swore his success as a Sales representative of an MNC industrial product firm was because of his social skills – later in my first job I was again reminded of the value of friends by my boss – who said “Deepak I have earned a lot and lost a lot – but I nothing that I don’t want to loose is my friends.” Still unclear? My wife boasts about being friends with the whole janta (population) also has reminded me of same lesson time and again. But, maybe I am not the friendly kinds I like to maintain my distance keep my space, my privacy.
Money, recognition that I seek is in the relationships – a book “Power of the Subconscious Mind” later educated me. The clients are in the transactions we do to all. The money resides in the pockets of who we transact with – and they are willing to let us have it (for a product or service) because we have given them our goodness (words, relations, care love). Isn’t that the fundamental truth of all Customer Relationship Management!
“I still remember the moment – they all looked so HAPPY to me – Why couldn’t I look like them.
Have a dream, visualize it, a single point focus is like a magnifying glass at the right focal length from Sun used to ignite the spark! His fixation on the car and happiness made him negotiate all the hardships with ease and maintain his motivation when chips were down.
Interview & playing basketball with his Son
When you’re connected to the purpose of your being on this planet everything will fall in place – when asked about what would he have done if he were to interview a man with a shirt; Chris says, “….he must have had really nice pants!” This wins him the internship. The wit is not a characteristic of Chris but the intensity of his intentions wins him the potential job.
Playing basketball with his sons, who fails to basket, in frustration he says, don’t ever play basketball, to his son. A second later he realizes that he has defeated his own value system “being there for his son” and corrects himself when he sermonizes his son, “don’t ever let anyone (not even him) tell you that you can’t do it. If you want something – Just Go For It (Period)!
And, he did just go for it period. Little lies when meeting a potential client, staying in the toilet (making belief of a time machine for his son), walking the city with one shoe, selling blood to buy an electric blub for the bone density machine, takes his son for all sales calls, etc.; all were the price in pursuit of happiness, i.e his quest for a successful career.
The final job-offer interview
Chris is wiser, filled with emotions to cry out loud, he fights his tears in the meeting hall. Runs outside the building, where he finds himself happy in the happy crowd. He remembers, “Everyone looked so happy to me”, and finally it was his turn at “Happiness”. Races to his son’s kindergarden and celebrates – with one person (his son) who has been with him in this quest.
Knock Knock – whose there – Happ(I)ness!!!
We all are!
Believe It!
Savour the realisation – till next week – Enjoy (Period).
